Know What to Do Before You Arrive

Severe Toothache

Urgent — see a dentist today

Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed — do not place aspirin directly on gums.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Critical — act immediately

Pick the tooth up by the crown only — never touch the root. Rinse briefly in milk if dirty, then gently place it back in the socket. If reinsertion is not possible, store the tooth in milk and get to a dentist within 30 minutes.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Urgent — see a dentist today

Save any fragments in milk. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free chewing gum to protect your tongue. See a dentist promptly.

Dental Abscess

Critical — act immediately

Contact a dentist immediately. Rinse with warm salt water for temporary relief. Do not squeeze or attempt to drain the abscess. If swelling spreads to your eye, neck, or throat, or you have difficulty breathing, call 000.

Lost Filling or Crown

Urgent — see a dentist today

Save the crown and bring it with you. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can hold it in place. Avoid chewing on the affected side and see your dentist within one to two days.

Managing pain while you wait

  • Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet — or alternate both for stronger relief. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
  • Apply a cold compress (ice wrapped in cloth) to the outside of your cheek — 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water).
  • Keep your head elevated — lying flat can increase pressure and worsen dental pain.
  • Avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums — this causes chemical burns to the tissue.

This is general guidance only and does not replace professional advice. Always consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider before taking any medication, particularly if you are pregnant, have kidney or liver disease, asthma, or are taking other medications.
