Gentle dental care for little smiles

Family-friendly children’s dentistry at Sienna Smiles, Hilbert. According to the AIHW, more than 40% of Australian children aged 5–10 have experienced decay in their primary teeth — making early dental visits essential for prevention and early intervention. We create positive dental experiences for children of all ages, from first teeth through to teens. Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) bulk-billed for eligible patients.

01 / What We Offer

Children's dental services at Sienna Smiles

Check-ups & examinations

A thorough oral examination covering teeth, gums, bite development, and jaw growth — tailored to your child's age and stage.

Professional cleans

A gentle scale and polish to remove plaque and calculus build-up, combined with oral hygiene instruction for parents and children.

Fissure sealants

A thin protective resin coating applied to the occlusal fissures (deep grooves) of posterior teeth. A Cochrane systematic review found that fissure sealants may reduce the risk of pit-and-fissure caries by up to 76% in children and adolescents at moderate to high risk of decay.

Fluoride treatments

Topical fluoride varnish (22,600 ppm sodium fluoride) applied to strengthen developing enamel through remineralisation. The Australian Dental Association recommends professional fluoride application for children at elevated caries risk, as it may help reduce the incidence of new cavities.

Early orthodontic assessment

Monitoring developing occlusion (bite), tooth spacing, and skeletal jaw growth so that malocclusion, crossbites, or arch-length discrepancies can be identified early and referred to a specialist orthodontist at the appropriate time.

Dental X-rays

Digital radiographs taken as clinically indicated to detect interproximal caries (decay between teeth), monitor the eruption sequence of developing permanent teeth, and assess alveolar bone levels — with up to 80% less radiation exposure than traditional film-based systems.

02 / First Visit

Your child's first dental visit

The Australian Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist when their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Research published in the Australian Dental Journal confirms that children who have their first dental visit before age two are significantly less likely to require restorative treatment by age five. Early visits help establish a positive relationship with dental care before any treatment is ever needed.

What to tell your child

  • Keep language positive and simple — "the dentist helps keep your teeth strong and healthy"
  • Avoid words that may cause concern, such as "hurt", "needle", or "drill"
  • Frame it as an adventure — they get to sit in a special chair and have their teeth counted
  • Children often take cues from parent or carer anxiety — a calm, matter-of-fact approach can help

What happens at the first visit

  • A gentle count of erupted teeth and assessment of the gums
  • A look at how the bite and jaw are developing
  • A conversation with parents or carers about diet, cleaning techniques, and fluoride use
  • A professional polish if clinically appropriate for the child's age
  • A plan for the next visit and any home care adjustments

Children as young as two can often sit in the dental chair for a brief visit. For very young children, the dentist may assess the child on the parent's lap. The goal at early visits is familiarity and positive association — not procedures.

03 / Child Dental Benefits Schedule

CDBS bulk-billing at Sienna Smiles

Sienna Smiles accepts and bulk-bills the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), an Australian Government program administered by Services Australia that provides up to $1,158 per eligible child over a two-year period for basic dental services. According to Services Australia, over 3 million Australian children are eligible for the CDBS in any given year, yet a significant proportion of eligible families do not utilise the benefit.

$1,158per child over a two-year period (2026 schedule)

Who is eligible

  • Children aged 2 to 17 years
  • The child or a parent or guardian must be eligible to receive a relevant Australian Government payment — this includes Family Tax Benefit Part A (FTB-A) recipients
  • The child must be a Medicare card holder
  • Eligibility is assessed by Services Australia — Sienna Smiles does not determine eligibility

What is covered under CDBS

  • Examinations and check-ups
  • X-rays
  • Cleaning (scale and polish)
  • Fissure sealants
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment (limited to certain teeth)
  • Extractions
  • Certain preventive treatments

Orthodontic treatment, cosmetic procedures, and services provided in a hospital are not covered under the CDBS.

Sienna Smiles bulk-bills the CDBS for eligible patients, which means no out-of-pocket cost for covered services within the available benefit. Your Medicare card is required at the appointment. If the benefit balance has been partially used, we will confirm the remaining amount before treatment.
